Pursuing Full Compensation For Motorcycle Accident Victims

Motorcycle accidents can produce devastating injuries from which a rider or passenger may never fully recover. And yet, motorcyclists face a tougher fight to recover damages from at-fault drivers than do victims of other car crashes. If you’ve been hurt in a motorcycle accident, the veteran litigation attorneys at Boyer Law Group, in Sterling Heights, are prepared to fight for your right to full compensation.

Confronting Negativity In The Pursuit Of Justice

We understand that what makes a motorcycle injury case different is the widely held misconception of motorcycle riders as unreasonable risk-takers. Determined Advocates For Injured Riders

What could be better on a sunny day than a ride up U.S. 53 and west to Stony Creek Lake? Or a bit farther north to Lakeville Lake? Unfortunately, no matter how carefully you ride, a negligent driver can upend your life at a moment’s notice.

According to the Michigan State Police, there were 3,384 motorcycle accidents in the state during 2016, with 2,460 causing injury and 146 resulting in death. In Macomb County, there were 216 reported motorcycle crashes: 150 causing injury and nine resulting in death. The leading causes for motorcycle fatalities and injuries were:

  • Speeding — 37 deaths and 383 injuries
  • Failing to yield — 25 deaths and 432 injuries
  • Being unable to stop — Eight deaths and 308 injuries
  • Reckless driving — Eight deaths and 55 injuries
  • Careless driving — Seven deaths and 173 injuries
  • Disregarding traffic control — Seven deaths and 55 injuries

There were also a large number of crashes whose cause was unknown.

Michigan’s Most Dangerous Motorcycle Accidents

The most common and deadliest type of motorcycle accident is a single vehicle crash. This occurs when the rider loses control of the bike and hits a fixed object, such as a tree or guardrail, or goes down onto the hard surface of the road. In 2016, there were 1,533 single vehicle motorcycle crashes, 59 resulting in fatalities and 1,231 that caused personal injuries.

Other common types of motorcycle collisions include:

  • Angle collisions — 475 crashes, 28 deaths and 353 injuries
  • Head-on left turns — 168 crashes, 19 deaths and 130 injuries
  • Rear-end collisions — 531 crashes, 15 deaths and 321 injuries

Unfortunately, these statistics do not give an indication of who is most often at fault. Even in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash, the fault may not lie with the rider. Unsafe maneuvers by passenger car drivers and pedestrians can cause a biker to lose control. An unsafe road surface can cause a crash, raising the possibility of liability for the government entity charged with maintaining the roads.
